Honoring and congratulating Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts for being named Super Bowl LIX MVP.
 
Body
WHEREAS, Jalen Alexander Hurts was named MVP of Super Bowl LIX on February 9, 2025, after leading the Philadelphia Eagles to their second Super Bowl victory in franchise history; and
 
WHEREAS, Hurts’ MVP performance included 221 passing yards, 72 rushing yards, 2 passing touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown as the Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22; and
 
WHEREAS, Hurts’ performance silenced doubters who questioned his accuracy, decision making, and ability to keep the offense humming if the Chiefs were successful at containing the Eagles run game. His Super Bowl MVP win elevates him into an elite tier of Super Bowl winning quarterbacks, and sets him on a Pro Football Hall of Fame trajectory; and
 
WHEREAS, Hurts has been no stranger to delivering in big moments when called upon. In 2018, Hurts, who a year earlier had been benched during the College Football National Championship Game, had to come off the bench to lead his Alabama Crimson Tide to a comeback victory over the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship Game. In December 2020, a rookie Hurts assumed the starting quarterback job after spending months as a backup, and led a moribund Eagles team to only their fourth win of the season; and
 
WHEREAS, Friends, teammates, and coaches a like credit Hurts’ composed demeanor to him being able to operate under pressure, face down setback and defeat, and deliver when his teammates need him most. His mantra, “keep the main thing the main thing,” has been a driving force behind his success in the NFL; and
 
WHEREAS, Jalen Hurts is now the fourth Black quarterback to win the Super Bowl, joining Doug Williams, Russell Wilson, and Patrick Mahomes. He’s the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl for the Philadelphia Eagles, who have had more African Americans line up under center than any other NFL franchise in history and are renowned for being a team that is consistently led by Black quarterbacks; and
 
WHEREAS, Jalen Hurts has become one of the most identifiable athletes in Philadelphia sports, starring in commercials for Jordan, Hulu, and Columbia Sportswear, and guest appearing in the hit comedy Abbott Elementary. His iconic performance in Super Bowl LIX has cemented him as a Philadelphia Eagles legend, necessitating special recognition for his MVP; now, therefore, be it
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That this esteemed body honors and congratulates Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts for being named Super Bowl LIX MVP.
 
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles as evidence of the true and sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
