Recognizing October 2024 as National Breast Cancer Awareness month and promoting activities that provide education, early detection, and support for all.
 
Body
WHEREAS, October is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a crucial time to promote education, early detection, and support for all individuals affected by breast cancer; and
 
WHEREAS, Approximately 1 in 8 women in the U.S. (13%) will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Despite advancements in screening and treatment, the incidence of breast cancer continues to rise; and
 
WHEREAS, In 2024, an estimated 310,720 women will receive a diagnosis of invasive breast cancer, with 16% of these cases occurring in women under 50. Additionally, 56,500 women will be diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), a non-invasive form of breast cancer where abnormal cells are found in the breast duct but have not spread outside the duct; and
 
WHEREAS, Tragically, an estimated 42,250 women will die from breast cancer in 2024, underscoring the urgency of ongoing efforts in education, prevention, and treatment; and
 
WHEREAS, Breast cancer is not limited to women; approximately 2,800 men in the U.S. will also be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year, with an estimated 530 men succumbing to the disease; and
 
WHEREAS, The lifetime risk of a man in the U.S. developing breast cancer is about 1 in 726, highlighting the need for awareness across all genders; and
 
WHEREAS, Since 1989, breast cancer death rates have steadily declined by 43% through 2020, primarily due to the introduction of innovative treatments and enhanced early detection methods. These significant scientific advancements reflect remarkable progress in cancer care and are a testament to the relentless dedication of the advocacy community; and
 
WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer, emphasizing the importance of early detection, prevention, treatment, and support for individuals affected by breast cancer; and
 
WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as an international health campaign dedicated to increasing awareness about breast cancer, emphasizing the importance of early detection, prevention, treatment, and support for individuals and families affected by the disease; and
 
WHEREAS, Across the City, patients, survivors, healthcare providers, and advocates will come together this October to host a range of events aimed at fostering community engagement and collective efforts in the quest for a cure; now, therefore, be it
 
 
RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Philadelphia
