Recognizing the week of October 6th through October 12th as “Emergency Nurses Week” in the City of Philadelphia.

WHEREAS, The Emergency Nurses Association, established in 1970, addresses issues relevant to emergency care, publishes professional guidelines, provides education for emergency nurses and issues a peer-reviewed journal; and
WHEREAS, Since 1989, the Emergency Nurses Association has celebrated Emergency Nurses Day on the second Wednesday in October; and
WHEREAS, In 2001 the Emergency Nurses Association expanded the celebration to a full week to shine a bigger light on emergency nurses and their commitment to patient care; and
WHEREAS, These professionals focus on the immediate care of patients who require immediate medical care; and
WHEREAS, The primary responsibilities of emergency nurses is to identify medical issues, determine severity, and provide immediate support to minimize negative long-term effects and, if necessary, sustain life; and
WHEREAS, Emergency nurses do more than treat physical issues, they must also treat the emotions of their patients as they are typically the first to see a patient; and
WHEREAS, Nurses in the ER don’t have the luxury of being specialized in one area of expertise. Instead, the ER RN nurse needs to know how to do variety of tasks quickly and competently. This requires an immense breadth and depth of knowledge; and
WHEREAS, As of 2021, the Emergency Nurses Association has over 50,000 members, reflecting the growing demand for emergency healthcare; and
WHEREAS, The ENA Foundation has supported emergency nurses globally through grants and scholarships totaling $5 million; and
WHEREAS, Emergency nurses work in chaotic and stressful environments to provide immediate care, prevent disability, and promote ongoing community health; and
WHEREAS, Emergency nursing is a demanding and unpredictable job. They spend much of their time on their feet and must be ready for unexpected changes in patients’ conditions as well as sudden influxes of patients to the emergency department; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the week of October 6th through October 12th be recognized as “Emergency Nurses Week” in the City of Philadelphia.
