Recognizing Clotilde Jiménez For His Representation Of The City Of Philadelphia On The Global Stage As A Commissioned Artist For The 2024 Paris Olympic Games

WHEREAS, Clotilde Jiménez was born in Philadelphia and grew up to become a world-renowned artist who had the privilege and honor of being commissioned to design posters for the Paris Olympic Games and Paralympic Games respectively. Clotilde is a multi-disciplinary American artist who works with ceramics, collage, painting, printmaking, and sculpture; and
WHEREAS, Clotilde Jiménez committed to a life as an artist when he was a teenager living in Philadelphia, the first major step in his career was when he enrolled at Charter High School for Architecture and Design (CHAD), a school that granted opportunities for at-risk children with creative ambitions; and
WHEREAS, As a student at CHAD he was given tools to refine his craft and develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the arts and his personal education. After graduating from CHAD, Jiménez continued to further his artistic education, receiving a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in Printmaking from the Cleveland Art Institute in 2013 and a Master’s in Fine Arts from the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 2018; and
WHEREAS, Jiménez’s style is a product of his personal ingenuity and determination; he began to create collages and explore new mediums out of necessity. As a young artist, he had limited finances for art supplies and resorted to experimenting with new materials such as magazines clippings, wallpaper, fabrics and old artworks; and
WHEREAS, Jiménez’s work explores the limitations placed on the body; considering race, gender and sexuality. Whether through ceramic, sculpture, collage, or painting, he uses his materials to tell several stories at the same time and to render his own lived experiences through an expansive archive; and
WHEREAS, He has exhibited at The Mennello Museum of American Art (Orlando, Florida), Phillips Collection New York (New York, New York), the Slade School of Fine Art (London, United Kingdom), the Jacob Lawrence Gallery (Seattle, Washington), and MAC Puerto Rico. His work is also featured in notable collections such as the Ford Foundation (New York, New York), Orlando Museum of Art (Orlando, Florida), Hessel Museum of Art (Annandale-On-Hudson, New York), and the Beth Rudin De Woody collection; and
WHEREAS, His work reflects his formative years as a child and teenager in Philadelphia, drawing inspiration from his lived experiences, the environment that surrounded him and the artwork he was exposed to. He has stated that his work is a way to process his own internal conflicts and hopes that his work is seen as a record of how life is today when it is looked back on by future generations; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes Clotilde Jiménez for his incredible achievement and representation of the City of Philadelphia on the global stage
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Clotilde Jiménez as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
