Recognizing September as “Childhood Cancer Awareness Month,” and promoting the public awareness and research of childhood cancer in the City of Philadelphia.
Body
WHEREAS, Childhood cancer is a critical public health issue that affects young adolescents worldwide and is the number one cause of death by disease among children under the age of 15 in the United States; and
WHEREAS, About one in 260 children will develop cancer before the age of 20, and one in five of our nation's children loses his or her battle with cancer; and
WHEREAS, This tragic disease leaves a profound and lasting emotional, psychological, and financial impact on the well-being of patients and families. Many survivors will suffer from the
long-term effects of comprehensive treatment, including secondary cancers; and
WHEREAS, Through 2020, only six new drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have been specifically developed for childhood cancer; and
WHEREAS, Philadelphia organizations such as The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center, and Drexel University’s childhood cancer data lab play a vital role in collecting data, providing support and resources, and advocating for more effective treatments; and
WHEREAS, Despite significant medical advancements in treatment and survival rates, childhood cancer research remains underfunded relative to its impact, and many types of childhood cancers still lack effective cures or treatments; and
WHEREAS, It is critical to advocate for new, safe treatment options to improve the outcomes and long-term health of children with cancer; and
WHEREAS, We honor the extraordinary courage of the children battling childhood cancer, their families and friends who care for them through every step of their cancer journeys, and Philadelphia’s hospitals, medical centers, research labs, and organizations that are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for these children and their families; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize September 2024 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Philadelphia.
