Honoring and Congratulating Preparatory Charter High School Graduate Kahleah Copper on winning the Gold Medal in Women’s Basketball during the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris France.

WHEREAS, Kahleah Copper, a distinguished native of North Philadelphia, attended Girard College and The Preparatory Charter High School, where she excelled in basketball, earning recognition on the All-Public League team, the All-State team in Pennsylvania, and the McDonald’s All-American team; and
WHEREAS, Copper played for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights Women’s Basketball team from 2012 to 2016, concluding her college career with the third most points in the team’s history; and
WHEREAS, Copper was selected as the 7th overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics, and was later traded to the Chicago Sky, where she became a starting player, was named an All-Star in 2021, averaged 14.4 points per game, led the team to their first championship, and was named Finals MVP; and
WHEREAS, Copper played a pivotal role in aiding Team USA to secure the gold medal at the FIBA World Cup in 2022; and
WHEREAS, On February 6, 2024, Copper was traded to the Phoenix Mercury; and
WHEREAS, In June 2024, Kahleah Copper was selected to the US Women’s Olympic Basketball Team to compete in the Summer 2024 Olympics in France; and
WHEREAS, During the Olympic Games Copper demonstrated her invaluable contribution to Team USA, particularly during the semi-final game against Australia, where she scored 11 points, aiding in the team’s 85-64 victory; and
WHEREAS, On August 11, 2024, Copper played a crucial role in securing the Olympic Gold Medal for Team USA, scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter to lead the team to a narrow 67-66 victory over France, earning Copper her first gold medal and the United States’ eighth consecutive gold medal; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the exceptional and historic role played by Kahleah Copper in securing victory for her team at the 2024 Olympic Games, it is both fitting and necessary to honor her with the distinguished title of Olympic Gold Medalist. Her outstanding performance and contribution have brought immense pride to the citizens of Philadelphia; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADLPHIA, That we hereby honor and congratulate Preparatory Charter High School Graduate Kahleah Copper on winning the Gold Medal in Women’s Basketball during the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris France.
FUTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Kahleah Copper as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
