Recognizing the 10th through 13th days of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijr as Eid al-Adha” in the City of Philadelphia during June 2024

WHEREAS, Eid al-Adha, the second of the two Eid celebrations, is celebrated from the 10th day of the Islamic Month of Dhul-Hijr to the 13th day by Muslims all over the world; and
WHEREAS, The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, and so the 10th day of Dhul-Hijr is expected to fall sometime around June 16th, 2024; and
WHEREAS, Eid al-Adha, sometimes referred to as the “Greater Eid,” honors the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son upon Allah’s command; and
WHEREAS, Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to slaughter his own son reflects the importance of self-subjugation before God, a core tenant of Islam, and his avoidance of Satan’s whispers to not slaughter his son instructs Muslims to strive in the path of God despite the temptations of the outside world; and
WHEREAS, According to Islamic tradition, Ibrahim’s son was spared by Allah and a lamb was slaughtered in his place, leading to the tradition of slaughtering lambs, goats, cows and camels to feed family, friends, the poor and the hungry during Eid al-Adha; and
WHEREAS, The word Eid literally means “feast,” and the “Feast of Sacrifice” is known for its large consumption of meat; and
WHEREAS, Fasting and charitable giving are also common practices during Eid al-Adha; and
WHEREAS, With over 200,000 Muslims calling Philadelphia their home, it is important that the religious significance of Ramadan to members of our community is recognized; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the 10th through 13th days of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijr be recognized as “Eid al-Adha” in the City of Philadelphia.
