Honoring Jim Tyrrell on the occasion of his retirement from the Department of Aviation and recognizing Jim’s 37 years of dedicated service to the City of Philadelphia.
 
Body
WHEREAS, A lifelong Philadelphian, Jim Tyrell was born on September 27, 1955 to William and Margaret Tyrrell. Jim was raised in Southwest Philadelphia, alongside siblings William, and Thomas, graduated from West Catholic Boys High School in 1973; and
 
WHEREAS, Jim Tyrrell has dedicated 37 years of service to the City of Philadelphia and the City’s airports. After being hired in 1987 as an Airport Properties Specialist, Jim was promoted to Airport Properties Manager in 1993 and to Deputy Director of Aviation for Property Management and Business Development in 2001 before being named Aviation’s Chief Revenue Officer in 2016. In each position, Jim was tireless in his dedication to improving operations and the customer experience at our City’s airports; and
 
WHEREAS, Jim has played a key role in the development and modernization of Philadelphia International Airport, helping to oversee the creation of the new Terminal F and the expansion of the airport’s cargo operation. As a result of these efforts, PHL served a record 33M passengers in 2019 and has expanded direct service to connect Philadelphia with more than 140 destinations worldwide; and
 
WHEREAS, The passenger experience at PHL has seen marked improvements under Jim’s leadership. Jim was instrumental in developing the current PHL Foods & Shops program, resulting in more than 150 food & beverage, retail, and lounge locations, including 17 Philadelphia brands such as Sabrina’s Café, Chickie’s & Pete’s, Geno’s Steaks, and Bud and Marilyn’s; and
 
WHEREAS, In his role as Chief Revenue Officer, Jim has worked steadfastly to ensure that the City and its airports have the resources necessary to provide world-class service and connect Philadelphia with destinations across the globe.  In recognition of Jim’s outstanding service, he was named the 2016 Airport Revenue News Airport Property Manager of the Year, and under Jim’s leadership, PHL received more than $200 million in airline revenues and nearly $300 million in non-airline revenues in FY23; and
 
WHEREAS, Jim Tyrrell has dedicated his career to the City of Philadelphia and its airports, working tirelessly to ensure that PHL and Northeast Philadelphia Airport (PNE) provide world-class service for the City and its residents. Council is proud to join with Jim and his loving family in celebrating his retirement and his many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the Council hereby honors Jim Tyrrell on the occasion of his retirement from the Department of Aviation and recognizes Jim’s 37 years of dedicated service to the City of Philadelphia.
 
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Jim Tyrrell as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
