Honoring and celebrating Murrell Dobbins Career and Technical Education High School’s Mustang Barbershop for its excellence in cultivating an exemplary career and technical education program in the art of barbering.

WHEREAS, Located in the vibrant West Lehigh neighborhood of Philadelphia, Murrell Dobbins Career and Technical Education High School was founded with distinction in 1937, forging a legacy of educational excellence and community enrichment; and
WHEREAS, Dobbins currently has approximately seven hundred and fifty students enrolled, with sixty-nine students specifically enrolled in the Barbering Career and Technical Education program. This year, the school anticipates graduating one hundred and seventy-four seniors; and
WHEREAS, Dobbins boasts a rich history of excellence, as evidenced by notable graduates such as North Philadelphia’s own Dawn Staley, the winning coach of the University of South Carolina in the 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament; and
WHEREAS, Dobbins offers a robust career and technical education curriculum, hosting twelve distinct programs that offer their students diverse career options upon graduation; and
WHEREAS, One such program is Dobbins’ Barbering program, which equips students with essential hair and skincare skills necessary to successfully pass the Pennsylvania State Board of Barbering License examination. This programming is complemented with entrepreneurial leadership development, preparing students to run their own barbering businesses; and
WHEREAS, Dobbins students utilize their developing barbering and entrepreneurial skills to operate Dobbins’ own Mustang Barbershop, which specializes in cuts, hair care, and skin care; and
WHEREAS, Instructors of the program, Faheem Alexander and Angela Miller, expertly foster an educational environment conducive to student growth and development; and
WHEREAS, Faheem Alexander, formerly a celebrity barber, serviced renowned artists like Common, The Roots, and other notable musical acts, yet transitioned from this position to serve as an educator in his hometown of Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, on Monday, April 29th, Good Morning America honored Murrell Dobbins Career and Technical Education High School, providing them with well-deserved national acclaim and new barbering supplies courtesy of Bevel Haircare Company; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA honors and celebrates Murrell Dobbins Career and Technical Education High School’s Mustang Barbershop for its excellence in cultivating an exemplary career and technical education program in the art of barbering.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Faheem Alexander and Angela Miller as evidence of the admiration and respect of this legislative body.
