Honoring and congratulating the Champion of the Week, Evin Jarrett, the Lead Building Trades Instructor at Mayfair School, for his exemplary service expanding vocational training opportunities for Philadelphia’s youth.

WHEREAS, Mr. Jarrett started his career in the trades, working in maintenance, and leveraged his experience to pursue a teaching career as a construction technology instructor. While in this teaching role, Jarrett received a Technical Teacher Education Degree from Temple University; and
WHEREAS, During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Jarrett was inspired to maximize his impact by providing Philadelphia youth with much-needed vocational training, establishing the only Middle School Building Trades program within the Philadelphia School District; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing the underrepresentation of women in skilled trade jobs, comprising only about 3% of the workforce nationwide, Jarrett has also dedicated his efforts toward providing young girls of color by providing them with opportunities often lacking in this field; and
WHEREAS, Through partnerships with sponsors from throughout the Philadelphia building trades industry, such as Rigid Tools, American Plumbing Stories, and the General Building Contractors Association, Mr. Jarrett is able to offer free summer programming, ensuring access to vocational education, which aims to equip young people with practical knowledge and skills to prepare them for trades-related occupations; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jarrett is best known as the “Dope Teacher” by students at Mayfair and throughout the School District, where students and Jarrett collaborate on a podcast discussing their projects and work; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor and congratulate the Champion of the Week, Evin Jarrett, the Lead Building Trades Instructor at Mayfair School, for his exemplary service expanding vocational training opportunities for Philadelphia’s youth.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an engrossed copy be presented to Evin Jarrett of Mayfair School, further evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
