WHEREAS, Overbrook High School, nestled in the heart of the 4th Council District on Lancaster Avenue, has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to academic excellence and holistic student development. Known as the “Castle on the Hill,” Overbrook is guided by its motto, "Overbrook Will NOT Be Overlooked." The school fosters excellence by challenging students to reach their highest potential in all aspects of their growth as lifelong learners, within a safe and caring student-centered learning environment; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Kahlila Johnson, an esteemed graduate of Overbrook High School, has provided exemplary leadership as Principal since June 2019. Her distinguished career in education, spanning from teaching to her current principal role, exemplifies her steadfast commitment to fostering educational equity and excellence; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson's leadership extends beyond academic success. She has championed the social-emotional well-being of students, fostering a supportive and inclusive school community. This dedication is particularly evident in her efforts to guide the school community through challenging times; and
WHEREAS, Overbrook High School's motto encapsulates the school community's collective resolve to ensure every student's success, regardless of challenges they may face. Under Dr. Johnson's leadership, the school has seen remarkable achievements, including a decrease in out-of-school suspensions, improved STAR Reading Assessment scores, and a commendable graduation rate. They have maintained a focus on career and technical education through programs such as digital media, preparing students for future success; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson's visionary leadership has been recognized through prestigious accolades such as the Lindback Award for Distinguished Principals, reflecting her commitment to educational excellence and student success; and
WHEREAS, Overbrook High School is a trailblazer in the district's innovative 21st Century Schools Model. This program provides students with industry-specific career pathways, such as entertainment technology. Through this initiative, Overbrook is preparing students for success in high-demand fields and equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the ever-evolving job market; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson's leadership has fostered a strong sense of school spirit and community pride at Overbrook. Alumni, like Dr. Johnson herself, actively contribute to the school's success, creating a network of support that benefits current students. Overbrook High School boasts a rich history and a bright future. The school's commitment to excellence and its focus on preparing students for college and careers are essential for the continued success of our city; and
WHEREAS, The Council of the City of Philadelphia commends Overbrook High School and Dr. Kahlila Johnson for their unwavering commitment to student success and their leadership in shaping a future-oriented learning environment. We celebrate their dedication to academic achievement, social-emotional well-being, and career preparation. RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby honors Dr. Kahlila Johnson, Principal of Overbrook High School, for her years of dedicated service to the students of West Philadelphia and further commemorates the story of Overbrook High School’s success.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to Dr. Kahlila Johnson and the Overbrook High School community as a sign of the admiration and respect of this legislative body.
