Renaming the 10900 block of Kirby Drive "Tony Caruso Way" in recognition of his decades of service to the Far Northeast Philadelphia Community.

WHEREAS, Anthony J. Caruso, ‘Tony’, age 50 passed away peacefully at home on November 12, 2023. Tony was a lifelong resident of Northeast Philadelphia, lovingly known as ‘The Mayor’ of his neighborhood. Tony was also a proud graduate of George Washington H.S., class of 1992, where he boasted of his perfect attendance record from kindergarten through high school graduation; and
WHEREAS, Immediately following, he began a career that would become a lifetime of service to others with the School District of Philadelphia. In 1995 he transferred to Baldi Middle School and considered all those with whom he had worked as part of his family; and
WHEREAS, Beginning in 1981, Tony dedicated his time to his Far Northeast Community in many ways. He was an active member of Our Lady of Calvary Church as a devoted usher for many years, a proud umpire of the local youth organization, a leader among his neighborhood watch, a poll worker for elections, and the Sergeant of Arms for the Jim Junod Lodge; and
WHEREAS, Tony was a die-hard Philadelphia sports fan, able to recite any stat on the spot purely from memory. From WWF to WWE, he thoroughly enjoyed wrestling. He also enjoyed the hobby of fishing, especially with his adopted family, the Szyszkos. Although his favorite thing by far was spending time with family and friends, above all else being the best ‘Uncle T’ to his loving nephew, Owen; and
WHEREAS, Tony Caruso will be fondly remembered for his infectious smile, kind spirit, heart of gold, zest for life, and quick wit. He left this world to continue his journey with the Lord; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby renames the 10900 block of Kirby Drive "Tony Caruso Way" in recognition of his decades of service to the Far Northeast Philadelphia Community.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Anthony J. Caruso as a sign of the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
